Chapter 22

The first knock at the door was quiet, almost inaudible, and the brown robed figure who shuffled through was just as silent as he knelt in the doorway.

"Prime Chosen," he whispered.

“No.” I pushed myself out of my throne and hurried over to him. “No kneeling. That’s not the point of all this.”

I grabbed his shoulders and pulled him up, glancing at the line outside. “You kneel to no one, not anymore.”

But the pain of his showing had already erupted from my simple touch, and the man fell back to his knees, rubbing at his right hand like it was on fire.

When he stood up again, a Greed crystal glimmering in the light, he was crying.

“Thank you.”

I just smiled. “Welcome to Greed.”

And on it went.

The queue wasn’t just formed of the unshown which had been brought with the Heads of Houses, but also the ones who worked in the building.

Some of them cried. Others were simply in shock. Nearly everyone left my box staring open-mouthed at their crystal like it would disappear at any second.

Some, who were on good terms with their masters, thanked me for my kindness, but returned to them rather than take my offer of free accommodation. Others lingered in the hall outside, afraid of their old owners’ reactions even now that they were equals.

It didn’t take as long as it had to give the rebels and students their showings, but it was long enough that a lot of the lords and ladies had left by the time I neared the end of the line of unshown.

And then, finally, Gilly came through the door.

“Gilly,” I smiled, holding out a hand. “I wondered when you’d turn up.”

She curtseyed low; her face pinched with strain. “Prime Chosen, forgive me.”

I frowned. “Are you alright?”

She launched herself at me in a flurry of brown robes. I was completely unprepared as she grabbed my hand with one of hers, and, with the other, she raised a huge kitchen knife.

I didn’t have time to react before she was slammed away from me with a burst of shadow.

I was frozen with shock for a long second, still staring at the spot where she had just stood and the knife laying on the floor between us.

“If you so much as look at my mate again,” Enzo growled, advancing forwards on the twitching servant. “I will rip out your heart and feed it to you. No matter how ‘important’ you are to her cause.”

I was still reeling from shock at the suddenness of the attack when my brain registered my mate was here.

“You were supposed to wait outside for me!” I hissed.

“And you were supposed to be careful,” Enzo retorted, his shadows restraining Gilly against the wall by her neck, though she showed no inclination to continue fighting.

Her hands were fighting with her brown unshown robe, yanking it up to expose her jeans and shirt underneath. A few more seconds of fumbling later exposed a band new brimstone, just below her navel.

“Gluttony,” she whispered, breaking down into tears.
